Yawayi!
Since November 2022, I have embarked on a dynamic journey as a professional freelancer, embracing a whirlwind of enriching experiences that have shaped my artistic path. Despite my relatively short tenure, I've been blessed with once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that have propelled me forward in my career. Notably, I was honored to receive the First Nations Internship with Stephanie Lake, delving deep into the vibrant contemporary dance scene of Naarm. Immersed in groundbreaking projects like ‘Manifesto’ and ‘Circle Electric,’ I honed my craft while also contributing in dramaturgic roles for Luke Currie-Richardson in his work ‘GEDOVAIT’ featured in the program 'Escalator' and understudying in the developmental stages of 'The Chronicles.' Collaborating closely with Jacob Boehme on his monumental work 'GUURANDA,' premiering at Adelaide Festival 2024, was a highlight, exposing me to a myriad of skills including puppetry, choreographic fundamentals, shadow puppetry, on-country residencies, and the invaluable understanding of dramaturgy's integral role within 'GUURANDA.' These experiences have not only enriched my artistic arsenal, but they've left me deeply curious about the endless possibilities that lie ahead in my artistic journey.
Collaboration is woven into the very fabric of who I am as an artist. There's magic that happens when minds come together, ideas intertwine, and creativity flows freely. It's in these spaces that I feel most alive, where I can truly thrive and contribute my own unique perspective.
Yet, amidst the whirlwind of my dance career, there's a special place in my heart reserved for our youth communities, especially the vibrant and diverse First Nations mob. Their energy, their stories, their creativity—it's like a beacon of hope for the future of our artistic world. Being able to nurture their talents, to guide them, and to amplify their voices is not just a passion; it's a deeply personal mission.
When I see a young artist finding their voice, expressing their truth, and making their mark on the world, it fills me with a sense of purpose unlike anything else. It's about more than just creating art; it's about building a community where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. And in that shared journey of creativity and growth, I believe we're not just shaping the future of the arts, but also creating a world where inclusivity and diversity are celebrated at every turn.
